Welcome
A Message from Our Principal
Welcome to the new school year! This year we are very excited to continue building our program with a focus on increasing student academics, social skills, daily living skills, vocational experiences, sensory integration, communication, and self-help skills. The student day will be comprised of various activities which include, but are not limited to, educational, social, and vocational opportunities which enhance student learning and facilitate opportunities to practice these learned skills.
As we continue to grow and develop, we welcome parental input and support. I urge you to be involved in your child’s educational progress and ask that you reach out to us if you need information, support, or resources. I am looking forward to working with your children and meeting all of you during this upcoming school year.
Preschool Program
The BCSSSD Preschool Program is geared to preschool disabled (PSD) students between the ages of three and five. The preschool classes serve multiply disabled students with language delays, social/behavioral concerns, or who are medically fragile with an emphasis on: daily living skills, age-appropriate play/socialization, readiness skills, communication skills, and sensory motor integration. Daily living skills practice is also our primary focus; we collaborate with our occupational therapists to help students become more independent with feeding, dressing, and toileting. During mealtimes we collaborate with our speech therapists to work to help the children accept different tastes, textures, and temperatures; working on drinking skills with a goal of open cup practice and teaching the children how to use utensils. Dressing and toileting go hand-in-hand with potty training. We also sequence the steps of hand washing as part of the routine each time the students use the bathroom.
Rest time/quiet time is built into the afternoon schedule since our busy day can be exhausting for the little ones. It also teaches the valuable skill of time and place, as this is the time for quiet. Our busy schedule includes: physical education, swimming, sensory integration in the classroom as well as in the sensory/playroom and performing arts. We also visit the Elementary Campus Wellness Center, which helps students practice become familiar with going to the doctor and the dentist, as well as teaching good health practices. Our students receive individual or small group therapy sessions with OT, PT, and speech, according to their IEPs. In the BCSSSD Preschool Program, we have a unique opportunity to meet once a week with our OT, PT, and speech therapists during Integrated Therapy Group. During this time we practice fine motor, gross motor, and communication skills with our therapists through thematic lessons that tie in with the preschool curriculum.
